Age-related macular degeneration: Is it avoidable?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of severe vision loss or complete blindness among people aged 50 and older. It’s a condition in which the macula, a small area of the retina responsible for central vision, is damaged.

In its early stages, AMD may not manifest signs or symptoms. However, when it progresses, the condition can cause one to lose the ability to recognize faces, drive, or read smaller prints.

Types of AMD

Dry

The most common type, dry AMD happens when the macula gets thinner with age, usually progressing slowly and gradually over time.

Wet

This condition usually leads to faster vision loss. It happens when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and damage the macula, creating a large blind spot in one’s central vision.

Ways to prevent AMD

Know your family history

Those who have family members with AMD have a much greater chance of developing it, so they need to get their eyes checked regularly.

Quit smoking

The destructive habit can double your risk of developing AMD as it exposes you to dangerous free radicals.

Get your greens

Leafy veggies like spinach, arugula, and kale are packed with potent antioxidants that are key for eye health.

Wear sunglasses or broad-brimmed hats

Overexposure to UV and blue light can lead to retinal damage.

Eat fish

Salmon, tuna, and sardines are some excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, healthy fats that contribute to eye health.

Maintain a healthy blood pressure and weight

Hypertension can lead to AMD as it restricts blood flow to the eyes. Losing weight is a proven way to keep one's blood pressure under control.

Get treatment before it’s too late

If you or your loved ones are manifesting symptoms of AMD, consult an eye doctor before they get worse.
